Roaring Fork Fire Rescue 41
The Roaring Fork Fire Station 41 project in Basalt, Colorado, involved a comprehensive renovation and addition to a 40-year-old structure, culminating in a 9,301-square-foot facility completed under budget. Faced with challenges such as existing city utilities and a tight building envelope that required preservation of the existing bays, roof, and loft, CCA successfully expanded and remodeled the station while adhering to strict setbacks.
The newly designed façade enhances its surroundings while clearly establishing the building's public safety purpose, featuring a combination of masonry, steel, and glass. Varied concrete masonry unit bands break up the massing, while a stepped metal fascia and CMU datum wall delineate the apparatus bays from the crew quarters and offices. Security is prioritized with Wi-Fi keypads for all entrances and a district-wide alerting system, alongside a main vestibule equipped with an emergency phone and showcasing the District’s antique fire truck.
The addition also includes secure and airtight living quarters above the apparatus bays, featuring a day room with expansive windows for natural light and ventilation, a dining area with workstations, and a fully-equipped kitchen adjacent to an outdoor grilling deck. Four quiet sleeping rooms, upgraded unisex baths, and a laundry area complete the living space, transforming the ordinary structure into a highly functional fire safety facility with improved apparatus bays, fully-staffed living quarters, and district offices, all delivered on time and within budget.
